Here is another...\n\nSeptember 22,2026\nTo The Cape Cod Times – Letter to the Editor\n“GREAT STREETS PROJECT“ for Hyannis? \nREALLY?\n\nWell done! Your front page article on Monday,\nSept 20 lays out the $5M traffic plan for South,\nMain and North Streets Hyannis clearly and\nconcisely. The plan has some good and needed\nimprovements. \n\nHowever, Jeff Speck, the “Walkable Cities”\nadvocate that our town hired (where does he\nlive?), along with our Barnstable Director of\nPlanning, James Kupfer, totally missed the mark,\ndeciding on an impractical and ill conceived, 2\nway Main Street. It will NOT improve pedestrian\nsafety (absurd assumption, actually the opposite).\n Yes, it WILL slow down traffic even more than it\nis already -causing more traffic jams making it\nmore dangerous to parallel park. Imagine the\ntraffic back up caused by someone parallel\nparking because no one can change lanes to\nmove on. It will certainly NOT “Showcase the\nVillage as a destination”. In fact, it will worsen\nour image by making it a traffic jam party. A bike\npath will NOT be to anyone’s advantage (again\nmore dangerous, as bikes can zip much faster\nthan the traffic). There are alternate roads for\nbikers to enjoy much more. Lastly, how on earth\nwill NARROWER LANES help not harm?\n\nHere’s a novel idea: Before the Main Street\nsegment gets under way, we should have a\nSpecial Town Meeting with input from our citizens\non alternative solutions for Main Street – if you\n“ran a gamut of options and studied it so closely”\nhow could you possibly come up with this\nridiculous plan which has already been tried and\nfailed? Having this topic buried on previous\nmeeting Agendas is not enough. This is important\nand worthy of a Special Meeting on this subject\nonly. I’ll bet you more than 90% of homeowners\nhad NO clue about this change until your signs\njust went up. I have been a resident for 50\nyears, 1.5 miles from Main Street and I have many\npractical solutions and better ways to use the\n$$$. I know many more of you out there do too!\n\nBy the way, I know people who would sign the\npetition. Where can I get a form?\n\nSusan Rome\nHyannis, 02601\n\nIf you'd like a petition to circulate among friends\nand family, message Eric Schwaab or email\neschwaab@gmail.co\nm",

"raw_excerpt": "󳃟\n󱡓\nBarnstable Unofficial\n‎Eric Schwaab‎\n󲄭\n‎‎Oct 2‎\n󲄭󳆖\n󳄫\nThey are not listening..503 PUBLIC COMMENTS\nON BARNSTABLE TRANSPORTATION PROBLEMS\nAND IDEAS. NONE ASKED FOR TWO-WAY\nTRAFFIC DOWNTOWN.\n\nOn October 1, the Town of Barnstable announced\nthat construction on the Great Streets Downtown\nHyannis project is beginning, and said the project\nwas informed by a “robust community-input\nprocess.”\n\nThis post looks at the public comments behind\nthis plan.\n\nIn summer 2022, the Town and the Cape Cod\nCommission invited residents to identify\ntransportation problems and ideas anywhere in\nBarnstable, using an online map. People could\ndrop a point or draw a route and describe what\nthey wanted. The plan reports 504 entries.\n\nThe Commission still publishes those entries on its\nArcGIS account, as the “Point Comments” and\n“Route Comments” layers of its map titled\n“Barnstable Complete Streets public comment.”\nThe published data contains 503 entries: 260\npoints and 243 routes. All 503 were reviewed for\nthis post.\n\nWHAT THE COMMENTS SHOW\n\nNO REQUEST FOR TWO-WAY TRAFFIC\nDOWNTOWN. None of the 503 entries asks to\nconvert downtown Hyannis streets to two-way\ntraffic.\n\nTHE ONLY MENTIONS OF TWO-WAY TRAFFIC.\nOne entry asks for two-way transit service on the\nCape Cod Community College campus road.\nAnother describes a residential road as a “2-way\nroad.”\n\nONE-WAY REQUESTS. Three entries ask to make\nstreets one-way. All three are outside downtown\nHyannis.\n\nWHAT DOWNTOWN COMMENTERS ASKED FOR.\n45 entries are located in or pass through\ndowntown Hyannis. Nine are map markers with no\nwritten text. Of the 36 with text, 15 ask for\ncrosswalks or better pedestrian crossings, the\nmost common request. Four ask for all-way stop\nsigns. Two ask to close or block part of Main\nStreet to vehicles.\n\nWHERE THE PROJECT CAME FROM. The Town’s\nplan lists the two-way conversion’s source as the\nGreat Streets study, not this comment process.\n\nIN FAIRNESS TO THE RECORD\nThe online comment period closed on August 31,\n2022. The tool asked people to suggest\nimprovements anywhere in town; it did not ask\nabout two-way traffic. The Great Streets process,\nwhich presented two-way traffic on Main Street to\nthe public, began with a kickoff meeting on\nNovember 15, 2022.\n\nSo these comments do not show that people\nopposed the conversion. They show what people\nasked for when they were invited to name\ndowntown’s needs, and the two-way conversion\nwas not among them.\n\nOPEN QUESTION\nPublic input on two-way traffic itself came later,\nin the Great Streets process from November 2022\nthrough May 2023. The consultants’ Final Report\npublished vote tallies from that process -\nincluding 16 approve and 32 don’t approve for the\nMain Street design (Figure 7, p. 22). The\nunderlying sign-ins, survey responses and written\ncomments are not on the Town’s project page or\nin the Final Report.\n\nSOURCES\nTown of Barnstable eNews, “Town of Barnstable\nHyannis Great Streets Project to Commence\nConstruction,” Oct. 1, 2026\nCape Cod Commission ArcGIS data\nTown of Barnstable Complete Streets\nPrioritization Plan, Cape Cod Commission,\nSeptember 2023\nCape Cod Commission, Barnstable Complete\nStreets Public Comment Period Open\nGreat Streets Downtown Hyannis Final Report\n(Speck & Associates / Stantec, 2023), Figure 7, p.\n22\nTown of Barnstable eNews, Great Streets kickoff\nnotice",
